Timeline of the BNP Grand Rally of 28th

  • The police set up check posts in every entry point to Dhaka city and checked everyone’s phone to find any connection to BNP. The day before the rally, 416 BNP activists were arrested.

 

  • 12:30 AM: The police arrested 200 BNP activists from Kakrail in the dark of the night on the early hours of 28 October.

 

  • Before the start of the rally, Awami League goons attacked a procession coming towards the BNP rally towards Kakrail junction, where they were repulsed by the police. Then the Awami League group went back and later broke the gate of the Chief Justice’s residence and pelted bricks, but the police present did not stop them. Through this, the police created a pretext to attack the peaceful assembly of BNP.

 

  • 10:00 AM: Meanwhile, Jamaat-i-Islami organised a rally near Motijheel. The police was first reluctant to allow them to stage the rally, but later, they were given permission.

 

  • 12:17 PM: BTRC ordered all mobile operators to stop internet connection in Paltan area from this morning. In the afternoon, the police cut off the electricity in the area and turned off the microphone of the rally and then attacked.

 

  • 2:18 PM: The police then proceeded in full force towards the rally via Nightingale junction. At that time they started firing bullets, sound grenades and tear shells. Several radio communications have come forward in this regard, which if heard, this plan will be clearly understood. The recording has been posted in the BNP official Facebook page.

 

  • As the rally began, the police attacked the BNP activists with tear gas and sound grenade.

 

  • Scores of people were shot in the police attack. Many senior leaders were shot. About a thousand activists were injured.

 

  • Shamim Molla, the leader of Jubo Dal of Mugda, was killed.

 

  • The rally was then suspended by the BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

 

  • 5:00 PM: A dawn to dusk general strike has been called on October 29 by BNP.

 

  • Meanwhile, Jamat-i-Islami completed their rally without any disturbance, and thanked the police for assisting them.

 

  • The police are at present raiding the areas near BNP central office to arrest any leader or activist.
